Doing Good Together: A Mini-Conference on Family Philanthropy

On October 3, 2025, the UCLA Lowell Milken Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofits hosted a powerful convening designed specifically for philanthropic families. Held in the Exploration Room of UCLA Luskin Conference Center & Hotel, the event created a discussion space for families navigating the evolving landscape of giving across generations.

With warm welcomes from Rose Chan Loui, Executive Director of the Center, and UCLA Law Dean Michael Waterstone, the mini-conference focused on the unique dynamics of family philanthropy — from honoring donor intent and structuring family foundations, to managing leadership transitions and fostering unity across generations.

Highlights included:

- Inspirational remarks by UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk.

- A survey of governance and legal structures presented by Reynolds Cafferata of Rodriguez, Horii, Choi & Cafferata LLP.

- A thoughtful fireside chat featuring Elyssa Elbaz of the Elbaz Family Foundation, Lowell Milken of the Milken Family Foundation, and Nicholas Pritzker of the Anthony and Jeanne Pritzker Family Foundation, moderated by Jeremy S. Lurey, Ph.D., CEO of Family Legacy 1st.

- Roundtable discussions that allowed attendees to share lived experiences, challenges, and best practices with one another.

- A wrap-up by Center Faculty Director Jill Horwitz.

This event was inspired by a powerful movement now underway: the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in history. Families are poised to make a transformative impact, but they must be equipped with the right tools, support, and community.

We are deeply grateful to all who participated and look forward to continuing this conversation and supporting the next generation of family philanthropists.
