Trump Moves to Strip Tax Exemption From Schools That Aid Minority Students

Ellen Aprill, the Center’s Senior Scholar in Residence, was quoted in the New York Times September 3rd article discussing new proposed tax regulations that would deny exemption to any private school that discriminates on the basis of race, color, or national origin. Under the proposed regulations, discrimination in any school policy or practice, including scholarship, athletic, or student-support programs, would be grounds for denial or loss of exemption, “regardless of the intent behind or the legality of such discrimination.” Aprill pointed out that even if some future administration revoked such regulations, a great deal of damage would have been done to schools that had felt compelled to comply with them.
